Young ISRO Scientists from Assam among key-contributors in Chandrayaan-3 Mission

Chandrayaan-3 is an Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) third lunar mission that was launched on July 14, 2023 and made a successful landing on the Moon’s surface on August 23, 2023. With this successful landing, India became the first country to land near the Moon’s south pole and the fourth country after the erstwhile USSR, the U.S. and China to make a soft landing on the lunar surface.

Among the brilliant minds contributing to the successful mission of ISRO are a good number of scientists from Assam whose dedication and resilience have propelled them to the forefront of the historic mission. They have set an example of success for the aspirants with their hard work, perseverance, determination and conviction. Here an effort is made to give a brief introduction of 5 scientists from Assam who are actively involved in the Chandrayaan-3 mission.

Chayan Dutta

Chayan Dutta who holds the position of Deputy Project director in ISRO’s Chandrayaan-3 mission hails from North Lakhimpur town. Chayaan is an alumnus of North Lakhimpur College (presently North Lakhimpur University) and the Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering of Tezpur University. Dutta was also part of the Chandrayaan 2 mission. In his role in Chandrayaan-3 mission, he was n charge of the vital Command and Data Handling subsystem, which acts as the central control unit for the orbiter, managing and coordinating all spacecraft functions. He is currently employed as a Scientist-G in the Department of Space’s UR Rao Satellite Centre which operates under the Department of Space – in Bengaluru.

Y. Bishal Singha

 

Among the brilliant minds contributing to ISRO’s monumental achievement was 28 year old Y. Bishal Singha hailing from Ramnagar Tuko, Silchar. A member of ISRO’s thermal control team, Singha’s tremendous expertise played a significant role in ensuring the mission’s success. Bishal, an alumnus of Silchar Collegiate School pursued mechanical engineering at Guwahati IIT. His journey took an inspiring turn when he joined ISRO in 2019 and selected as a team member for the mission.

Nidhi Sharma

Nidhi Sharma is one of the top ranked scientists who hails from Assam’s Barak Valley and daughter-in-law of Assam’s Tinsukia district. Her parents are settled in New Delhi. Nidhi was associated with Chandrayaan-2 mission too. With a decade of steadfast service to ISRO, she showcased her unwavering commitment and dedication towards her job. She was involved in the Landing Control Centre of this mission.

Dr. Baharul Islam Barbhuyan

Dr. Baharul Islam Barbhuyan, a scientist from Hailakandi district, has played a pivotal role in the development of ISRO’s Chandrayaan Mission. Dr. Islam’s remarkable journey from Government Victoria Memorial Higher Secondary School in Hailakandi to ISRO has resulted in the successful soft landing of the Vikram lander on the lunar surface. Dr. Baharul Islam’s specialised contribution in developing the high-resolution sensor for Chandrayaan -3 have played a crucial role in the triumph of the mission.

Uddipana Kalita

Uddipana Kalita, a prominent ISRO scientist with roots in Jamugurihat, played a pivotal role as a member of the ISRO scientists’ team that dedicated tireless efforts to ensure the triumph of the Chandrayaan-3 mission. Uddipana Kalita is the daughter of Suren Kalita, the former librarian of THB College, Jamugurihat, who resides in Bahbari Satra. Uddipana’s educational journey starteat KV No 2, Airforce Station, Tezpur and she graduated from AMITY University with a degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering in 2012.  Uddipana Kalita was actively involved in the Launch Control System of Chandrayaan_3 and Landing of lander Vikram on the Moon.

Nazneen Yasmin

Nazneen Yasmin, hailing from central Assam’s Nagaon district, embarked on her ISRO journey two years ago. She completed her B.Tech in Electronics from NITS Mirza College Guwahati in 2013 and her M.Tech from Tezpur University. Nazneen joined ISRO in 2021. She was involved in radar tracking for more than a year. Her expertise in radar tracking within ISRO’s launch department has been pivotal over the past year.
